Let Me Be - A Poem

Let me make you the picture on my lockscreen,
You deserve to radiate on every phone there’s ever been.
I want to be the big spoon to your small,
So if you roll over in your sleep, you won’t fall.
Support your goals and help you thrive,
Beside the life you’re already building, fully alive.
I don’t want to cage you or claim a throne,
You run just fine as a system of your own.
You don’t need me to function or to be complete,
I just want to be the battery charger at your feet.
The one you barely notice doing what it’s for
Until the blinking red is gone and you need no more.
I want to be the quiet seat beside your name,
When the room applauds and echoes your fame.
Not the reason you stand or the cause of the show,
But the place you sit when the standing feels slow.
I want to be the hairy chest you lean upon,
Not because you’re small, but because weight goes on.
Even empires need somewhere safe to rest,
Without explaining strength or passing a test.
I want to be the lockscreen on your phone,
Not the image you show, but the one you’ve known.
The glance you give a hundred times a day,
That steadies your breath without needing to say.
I want to be the message you don’t open or read,
The quiet ‘Still here’ that fulfils all need.
I don’t need to lead you or set the way,
I want to walk beside you day by day.
And carry the things that don’t need a plan,
Just steady hands and the will to stand.
When you’re sharp, I admire what you do,
When you’re tired, I don’t ask more of you.
I want to be the hand on your back,
That says you can rest, you don’t need to act.
I want to be useful in ways that are matter,
Unpolished, unnoticed, but there when you splatter.
The spare key kept where it’s meant to be,
The appointment remembered quietly.
The steady tone when the world is loud,
When noise presses in like a crowd.
You don’t need saving or fixing anew,
You don’t need permission to be you.
I just want to be the one you trust,
When winning fades and glory turns to dust.
The person who stays when there’s nothing to shove,
When you’re simply human, and still deserve love.ust,
When winning fades and glory turns to dust.
The person who stays when there’s nothing to shove,
When you’re simply human, and still deserve love.
